Inner rings for needle bearings without their own ring

An inner ring turns a needle roller bearing without its own inner ring into a complete bearing. Needle bearings are often mounted straight onto the shaft to save installation space, but that calls for a shaft hardened and ground to raceway quality. If the shaft is ordinary structural steel, or an existing raceway has worn in, a separate inner ring takes over that function.

That also makes the ring a repair item. On wear you replace the ring instead of the complete shaft, and on a large or machined shaft that is the difference between a service and an overhaul. The ring is pressed onto the shaft and is hardened and ground on the outside as a running surface for the needles.

Choose on three dimensions: bore, outside diameter and width, exactly as the needle bearing specifies. The width has to cover at least that of the bearing, because too narrow means the needles run over the edge and cut into the ring. SKF supplies this range. For fitting and for taking up axial space, a puller sleeve and a spacer ring belong with it.
